Can't Sell on the Steam Market? Every Cause and How to Fix It
Summary: If you can't sell on the Steam Community Market, the cause is almost always one of four things. The account doesn't meet Steam's selling requirements yet (a purchase more than 7 days old and less than a year old, plus Steam Guard for 15 days). A temporary restriction applies, such as a new device, a password reset or a cancelled trade. The item itself isn't marketable yet or at all. Or a limit is in the way, such as the $2000 wallet cap. This guide matches each symptom to its cause and fix, using Steam's support FAQs.
You click an item and there's no Sell button. Or the Market says your account can't use it. Or you listed something days ago and nobody can see it. Steam has a reason for each of these, and most of them sort themselves out after a fixed wait. This page starts from what you're seeing and works back to the cause.
Steam Support can't lift most of these. The Restrictions FAQ says "Steam Support cannot modify trading or Community Market restrictions, regardless of the circumstances", so the fix is usually to wait out the period or change the setting that caused it.
Quick diagnosis
| What you see | Most likely cause | Jump to |
|---|---|---|
| The Market says your account can't sell, for every item | Account requirements not met | Account requirements |
| It worked yesterday, now it doesn't | A temporary restriction (new device, password reset, Steam Guard change) | Temporary restrictions |
| One item has no Sell button, others do | The item isn't marketable yet, or at all | Item not marketable |
| Listing made, but it isn't on the Market | Market hold | Held listings |
| Steam won't accept your price | Wallet cap or price limit | Limits |
| An item is missing from Steam Bulk Sell | Private inventory, or the item isn't a commodity | Our tool |
1. Your account doesn't meet the selling requirements
The Market FAQ lists two requirements:
- A successful purchase more than 7 days old, but not older than a year. The Restrictions FAQ says Steam Wallet funds, games, DLC and software count. Retail CD keys and gifts don't, and redeeming a gift doesn't count either. A chargeback resets the requirement.
- Steam Guard enabled for 15 days.
Fix: If your only purchase is over a year old, make a new one, such as adding funds to your wallet, and wait 7 days. If Steam Guard was off, turn it on and wait 15 days.
Just added funds with a new card or PayPal?
The Market FAQ says that funding your wallet with a new, unverified credit card or a PayPal account means a three-day wait before you can use the Community Market. Only credit cards and PayPal trigger it. You can lift it early for a credit card on Steam's Credit Card Verification page. Steam sends two small authorizations to the card, and you enter the exact amounts. You get three attempts, and the authorizations drop off your statement in 5 to 10 business days. PayPal and virtual cards can't be verified, so for those you wait the three days. Once a card is verified, the FAQ says it won't trigger the restriction again.
2. A temporary restriction is active
These come from the Restrictions FAQ:
| Trigger | How long | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Signed in on a new device | 7 days on that device | Doesn't apply if you've had the Mobile Authenticator for at least 7 days. Clearing cookies, switching browsers or reinstalling Steam can make a device look new. |
| Steam Guard turned off | No trading or Market while it's off | Turning it back on restarts the 15-day wait. |
| Password reset | 5 days, or 30 days if the account was inactive for more than 2 months | This applies to resets, not to normal password changes. |
| Mobile Authenticator removed | 15 days | |
| Mobile Authenticator added, with no Steam Guard before | 15 days | If email Steam Guard was already on, there's no new restriction, but trades in the first 7 days can still be held for up to 15 days. |
| You cancelled a trade that was on hold | 7-day cooldown | The Holds FAQ says Support can't remove it. |
| You reversed CS2 trades with Trade Protection | 30 days of no trading or Market | Only the account that reverses is restricted (Trade Protected Items FAQ). |
| Wallet funded with a new, unverified credit card or PayPal | 3 days of no Market | See the card verification note above. |
| Trade ban | Temporary or permanent | |
| VAC ban, cooldown or Overwatch ban in Counter-Strike 2 | While the ban applies | No CS2 store access, no CS2 item trades and no item drops. Support can't remove a VAC ban. |
The Restrictions FAQ also says limited user accounts can't use several Steam features. Its Limited User Accounts article explains how to lift the limit. Digital gift cards can, in rare cases, add a restriction too.
Fix: Note the trigger and the date, wait it out, and avoid doing it again just before a sale. The device rule catches people most often. Signing in on a new PC or a fresh browser before a big Multisell run means a week's wait, unless the authenticator has been on for 7 days.
3. The item itself can't be sold
If other items have a Sell button but this one doesn't, the problem is the item.
- Recently bought items. Items bought in-game or on the Market aren't tradable or marketable until the date shown in your inventory (Restrictions FAQ). Look in the item's description for the date.
- Dota 2 treasures and timed drops. The Market FAQ says newly bought Dota 2 treasures can't be sold for the time shown on their item details page, and Dota 2 timed drops are permanently unmarketable.
- Third-party restrictions. The FAQ says some items from other developers' games may not be marketable after purchase. The item description says when this applies.
- The game isn't on the Market. It's "up to the game developer" whether a game takes part (Market FAQ).
- CS2 items you just received in a trade. They're Trade Protected for 7 days and can't be "consumed, modified, or transferred" in that time (Trade Protected Items FAQ).
Fix: For dated locks, wait for the date. For permanently unmarketable items, there's no fix. Steam Support can't change items (Market FAQ).
4. Your listing is on hold
You created a listing and confirmed it, but buyers can't see it. That's a market hold. The Mobile Authenticator FAQ says listings created before you add an authenticator, or in the first 7 days after, are held for 15 days. Listings created more than 7 days after you add it aren't held. Adding an authenticator doesn't shorten holds that already exist.
Fix: Wait for the hold to end, and set up the authenticator now so future listings go straight through. For the full breakdown of holds, cooldowns and Trade Protection, see trade holds and market holds explained.
5. A wallet or price limit is in the way
From the Market FAQ:
- $2000 wallet cap. You can't create a listing if your current balance plus the sale price would go over $2000 (or about the same in your currency). Balances across multiple accounts are added together.
- Maximum listing. About $1800 per listing.
- Minimum price. Some currencies have a minimum sale price.
- Currency missing? If the Market isn't showing your local currency, the FAQ says the likely reason is that you've never added funds to your wallet.
Fix: Spend some wallet balance before your next batch, or split a big sale over time.
6. The item doesn't show up in Steam Bulk Sell
Our builder reads your public inventory and only lists commodity items Steam marks as marketable.
- Inventory not loading: set your profile and inventory to Public (how), wait a minute, and try again.
- Item missing from the list: it may be a one-off item with its own wear or pattern, such as a CS2 weapon skin. Steam's Multisell page doesn't accept those, so sell them from your inventory (how to sell items on Steam). It may also still be locked by a marketable date.
- Trading cards missing: they live in Steam's own "Steam" inventory, which the builder doesn't currently support. See how to sell Steam trading cards.
When to contact Steam Support
Since Support can't lift restrictions, holds or cooldowns, contact them for account security problems: a trade you didn't make, a lost authenticator, or an account you can't sign in to. Use help.steampowered.com.
Once your account is clear, load your inventory on Steam Bulk Sell to list all your commodities in one Multisell batch.
